I first discovered this book in our library, took it home, got yarn for the first project and was hooked. The directions are foolproof and straight forward, the measurements for different sizes fit, all abbreviations are explained, there are a variety of projects from sweaters, vests and cardigans to hats, mittens, baby booties, wash cloths, bibs and covers for clothes hangers. All you need to know is knit, pearl, decrease and increase stitches. For sewing the parts of the sweaters together I looked up some techniques in "Teach yourself Visually Knitting", another book I highly recommend, but if you are a half decent knitter you can really figure it all out without further help. The photos are pretty, the little models very cute. You can use the same type of yarn for several projects and instead of limiting you to any specific brand yarn the instructions tell you the required weight and appropriate needle size to achieve the right gauge, so the choice of yarn is yours, whether you like 100% polyester or want to knit with pure wool. All projects are really easy. I guess you could actually finish some of them in a day as the title says, I needed 3 or 4 evenings for a sweater and 2 evenings for a pair of mitts or booties. In fact once I got going I finished 3 sweaters, 3 hats, 2 pairs of mittens and a pair of booties for the three new babies in our family just over the holidays. All the gifts were much appreciated and though I can't compete with some of the super knitters in our family I got the satisfaction of contributing something cute and handmade for the young ones.Product details

Cute baby patterns in this book. Can be knitted quickly.
These patterns were nice, however all the patterns seem to be repetitive of each other. Not enough creativity of the designers.
Lots of great patterns — working on a cardigan right now!
I was hopeful when I received the book that I could do up a baby's cardigan over a weekend. Now, I'm disappointed that I'm still not done after several weekends. My hands have struggled with the large needles and chunky yarn since I usually knit with sock yarn. The book does have lovely patterns and beautiful photos. I'm just not a speedy knitter after all.
I work with a lot of new mommies and grandmommies,so this is a good set of directions for quick gifts.It does take more than a day unless you are making the bib,mitts, washcloths. I've been knitting forever and it still takes me more than a day to make these. I'm not crazy about the doubling of yarn, as it would make baby hot.Though if you want to bust your stash, this would be the book to go to in a pinch.
No, I wasn't crazy about this book BUT it is a good reference for a few very basic items the basic pullover, basic vest, etc. The thing I didn't like was that virtually the same exact pattern, with just a color scheme changed, was repeated two or three times throughout the book. Example The cardigan on the cover in blue and white... next pattern, the same cardigan in green and white. I didn't understand this. That being said I did knit a basic pullover from this book and it came out quite well. I had to mess with the gauge and sizing quite a bit but overall I have an adorable finished product. Oh, and "Knit in a Day" is perhaps a little exaggerated. It took me a couple of days and I'm a fairly fast knitter. Just sayin'.
I am giving this three stars because the knitting patterns are variations of a few patterns. So there are not 20 distinctly different patterns. The book has nice pictures with cute kids wearing the sweaters, etc.
The patterns are good for beginners because they are pretty much basic knitting and easy to understand. I had a bit of a problem with the booties and needed to get some help. I didn't have any problems with the mittens. I have not tried any of the other patterns in the book.
I have a book that is very comprehensive with the basics. I refer to it if I am having trouble with my knitting stitches. If you don't have one you may want to invest in one.
