Winter 1763. Alec, Lord Halsey is sent on a diplomatic mission to Midanich, imperial outpost of the Holy Roman Empire, to bargain for the freedom of imprisoned friends. Midanich is a place of great danger and dark secrets; a country at civil war; ruled by a family with madness in its veins. For Alec it is a place of unspeakable memories from which he barely escaped and vowed never to return. But return he must, if he is to save the lives of Emily St. Neots and Sir Cosmo Mahon. In a race against time, Alec and the English delegation journey across the icy wasteland for the castle fortress where Emily and Cosmo are imprisoned. The severe winter weather is as much an enemy as the soldiers of the opposing armies encamped along the way. Awaiting him at his destination is the Margrave and his sister, demanding nothing less than Alec’s head on a pike.

“Lucinda Brant has once again constructed a deliciously complex story that is immensely readable and completely un-put-down-able. The dénouement is as chilling as it is gobsmacking; and although I will say that I had an inkling of where things were headed, she kept me guessing right up until the last minute, and then completely wrong-footed me. If you’re looking to read a gripping, intelligently written and skilfully crafted historical mystery, then you need look no further. I promise you won’t regret it.” —Caz Owens ALL ABOUT ROMANCE, rated a DESERT ISLE KEEPER
“One of the things that I have come to admire about Lucinda Brant’s writing is how intricately layered her plots are. She reveals things throughout the story, which keeps the reader from becoming frustrated, but also holds back enough that the ending always is a surprise. My first encounter with her work was a mere five months ago, and I have now read all of her full-length books. Every one of them is worthy of five stars, but I think that Deadly Peril is possibly the best yet. It is, quite simply, a perfect combination of mystery, romance, and history.” — Lady Wesley ROMANTIC HISTORICAL REVIEWS, rated 5 STARS

I had really high hopes when I began reading this third book in the series. I've become a huge fan of Alec and after reading the reviews on this one expected to enjoy it even more than the first two. Let me state very clearly that the storyline is really interesting. A call for help comes from Cosmo who, along with Emily, has traveled into dangerous territory and both are now apparently being held for ransom in a province/country/territory (not sure what it was) called Midanich. In Alec's early days of diplomatic service, he had been posted in Midanich and it doesn't take long for the reader to understand Cosmo's and Emily's capture is based on Alec's mysterious time spent there and is obviously related to his former relationship with the current ruler of that country – the current Margrave (military commander), Prince Ernst. It's also obvious that Ernst's sister, Joanna, plays heavily into the mix. From the reader's standpoint, the storyline turns a little angsty when Alec thinks back on his time there, castigating himself for what he considers some very poor behavior by himself, but toward whom? If you decide to read, you'll need to hold onto your seat because it will be some time into the storyline before the details of how and why the Margrave wants Alec back in the country and why Alec can barely bring himself to confide in those closest to him about his time in Midanich. All this of course, serves to add to the suspense in the story.
One really cool part of this story is that Alec takes on a totally different persona as "the Baron" which was quite delightful and spun out very well by the author. Another lovely part of the book is that Alec and Selina have some quality time together even as he goes about righting the wrongs in the lives of the people he loves. I really like it that Alec's and Selina's passionate love life doesn't include lots of sexually explicit details. Even so, the reader won't get much passionate physical love within the pages of this book. But, there is a remarkable steady love between the two which comes across each time they're together.
**Spoilerish** Whether or not it's fair to the author and to the book, I must confess some personal issues with this book. I found parts of this story simply too twisted for my personal tastes. In fact, parts of it took away from my overall enjoyment of Alec as my hero type. I'm not judging as to whether this will be the case for any other readers. Brant is a very talented author. But, I have a difficult time reading about former illicit sexual escapades of my "main guy" - especially when it's a very uneasy confession to the woman he loves. And, then to have to face these conquests, if you will, in person and have Alec and Selina act all friendly like none of it matters, is really against my taste. The icing on the cake of course would be the details of the backstory between Alec, Ernst and Joanna. It simply left too much sludge, if you will in my being, causing me to feel a little downturn in my emotions.
Still, Four Stars Overall.

Deadly Peril A Georgian Historical Mystery Alec Halsey Mystery Book 3 edition by Lucinda Brant Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
You can't go wrong with Lucinda Brant or the delicious hero, Alec Halsey. Tension filled intrigue, a swoon worthy hero, a bit of romance in an only slightly convoluted plot make for a delicious reading experience. There were, I felt, a few lapses into modern language and a couple of extraneous plot points, but this is overall, another fine entry into the Alec Halsey mystery series of which, I'll definitely be reading more as its published.
Bottom line if you like your historical novels to be about more than ball gowns, weekend house parties, contrived 'misunderstandings,' and scheming to arrange a marriage to 'save the family fortune' then you'll enjoy the Alec Halsey mysteries. They're intelligent, well written and enjoyable.
Have you ever wondered if something you did in your past would ever come back to haunt you or even mean the deaths of your closest friends.
'Deadly Peril," will transport you back to a time when, Lord Alec Halsey, was just a young man who felt no consequences for his actions until it nearly meant his life but through a miracle or it seems, he manages to escape to freedom. Now, many years later like a spider's web entraps helpless victims, Alec, dear friend, Sir Cosmo Mahon and Emily St. Neots are about to become food for a very nasty and bitter spider. Can Alec save them as the country they are captive in is at war? Will bringing the woman he desires to marry, Selina Jamison Lewis, along in this what seems an impossible mission to save innocent lives mean the end of her life instead?
I advise the reading of the first two installments of the ' Alec Halsey Mystery' series to become well acquainted with all of the fascinating characters that, Lucinda Brant, author so vividly brings to life. You won't be disappointed, I promise you!
WOW -- another one in the series I've read straight through in one sitting!! I am so impressed -- but very sorry that I have to wait until the end of 2017 to get the next book in the series. Yes, you could read this as a stand-alone book, but you'll have a much better experience if you read the entire series in order because the characters grow and become so much more filled out if you read all of the books.
As a young diplomat Alec Halsey was stationed in the small nation of Midanich. His boss was expelled from the country and Alec was thrown into their dungeon. Luckily, he managed to escape and get back to England. Now, over ten years later, that same country has imprisoned two of Alec's friends and demanded that he return in order to free them.
The old ruler has passed away and the country is now embroiled in a civil war that Alec must contend with in order to reach his friends and free them. Alec's uncle, Plantagenet Halsey, his love Selena and his godmother the duchess of St. Neots have wormed their way into the rescue party, so Alec has to manage to keep them safe, himself safe and of course rescue his friends.
Alec has a new valet, Jefferies, in this book and I like him very well. I did miss Tam, but I'm sure he'll be featured in other books.
Alec has to deal with piracy, kidnapping, imprisonment and betrayal as well as the dangers of civil war and madness in this book. It was an excellent read!
